Blu-ray Disc-R (BD-R) discs are expected to reach a crucial market size of 20 million units in 2009 that will give the format momentum for sharp growth thereafter, according to Ritek.
Judging from previous experience in the development of the CD-R and DVD-R/+R markets, 20 million units is a pivotal number in terms of economies of scale, Ritek remarked.
Ritek noted that it took five to six years from launch for CD-R and DVD-R/+R to reach full market penetration. Introduced in 2006, BD-R discs are expected to reach a critical mass which will spur economies of scale next year, the maker commented.
Ritek said BD has lots of potential for further technological development. The maker cited 16-20-layer BD-R discs with a capacity of 500GB which have been demonstrated by some makers as an example.
