Samsung has showcased a new mobile phone prototype with a foldable OLED display at FPD 2008 expo in Japan.
The prototype, which is not expected to be released in the mainstream mobile phone market anytime soon, has been on display at Samsung's booth to operate and its foldable OLED display was shown to open and close automatically.
The device has an internal 2.5-inch display that folds into half and reveals a smaller external one. According to specifications provided at the show, the un-named prototype device has an internal WQVGA display with a resolution of 480 x 272 RGB that can display 16M (8bit) colors, a luminance of 200 cnd/m2 and an impressive contrast of 100,000:1. The panel is just 0.5mm thick and its lifetime is rated at 20,000 hours.
