Toshiba is aiming to grab half the global market for solid state drives over the next 2 years with its plan to increase its output of SSDs 15-fold by 2010.
While solid state drives provide several advantages over traditional hard disks, such as better shock resistance and lower power consumption, they are currently still very expensive.
Samsung Electronics and Toshiba are currently battling a steep fall in SSD prices due to over capacity and hope that the growing use of SSDs in newer laptops and PCs will help revive the industry.
However, Toshiba seems to have high hopes in order for them to increase their production 15-fold over the next two years.
At present, Toshiba produces 40,000 units a month, but they predict monthly shipments to increase to 100,000 between April '09 and September '09 and reach 600,000 by 2010.
Toshiba projects about 10% of laptops worldwide will be using SSD between 2010 and 2011. Then again, with the growing popularity of smaller low cost laptops (netbooks) that use SSDs, these will likely account for most of the products using SSDs.
