Lite-On Plans SATA Burners

Lite-On IT is planning production of DVD burners supporting the SATA (serial advanced technology attachment) interface standard, according to industry sources.

Lite-On IT, recently scheduled a tentative launch for later this quarter in response to LG Electronics' unveiling its GSA-H30N, a SATA Super Multi DVD burner model, the sources pointed out.

SATA increasingly is taking the place of PATA (parallel ATA) in hard disk drives since this year, the sources indicated. But for optical discs, almost all ODD models adopt the PATA standard due to lower costs, the sources noted.

There is no real substantial technological barrier for ODD makers to shift from PATA to SATA, and the adoption of the latter actually hinges on market demand, said the sources. SATA will replace PATA as the mainstream interface in DVD burners by 2007 at the earliest, the sources added.
