Datasafe Pro 8x Hub Printable TYG02 DVD-R

After a lot of persuasion Datasafe have gone upmarket with the professional DVD-R manufactured by Taiyo Yuden. These discs are genuine TYG02 full face printable disc packaged in tubs of 10 and are so far exclusively available only from the one on line retailer who sent me some samples for review. The dye is a mid brownish purple in color with a clear center ring overprinted on the top with a smooth white printable surface. The inner unused dye area has the code GG000121 & there is a batch number cut into the clear center ring but I am unable to read it The rim is smooth with only a few minor signs of the glue protrusion.

Well the discs & packaging look nice lets see if they live up to expectations.

Pioneer DVR-109 v1.50

NEC ND-3520AW v3.04
8x Z-CLV burning in 8min 9secs
8x Z-CLV burning in 9min 49secs
PI Exceptionally low reaching a maximum of 7
Jitter Fairly constant at 10% for all the scan (The large peak at the end is an error from the drive & not the media)
PIF Total 7 with a peak of 1 and an average of 0 could not be better
PI a good scan here peaking at 18 during the 6x burn area and well below 10 for the rest of the scan. The write strategy is slightly out for 6x burn but still a good result
Jitter 10% for most of the scan with a slight increase at the 6x burn area
PIF Total 132 with a peak of 2 is a very good result

7X - 8X P-CAV in 9min 32secs
4X CLV in 14min 34sec
PI Exceptionally low reaching a maximum of 6
one of my best scans
Jitter Fairly constant just above 10% with an average of 10.7%
PIF Total 5 with a peak of 1 and an average of 0 better than the Pioneer
PI Burnt at 4x speed gives a peak of 53 is a good result but no where as good as the high speed drives

Jitter Fairly constant just over 10% for all the scan average of 10.7%
PIF Total 9 with a peak of 1 and an average of 0 could not be much better

12x burn in the Pioneer DVR-109

12X burn in the NEC ND-3520AW

16X burn in the Benq DW1620

16X burn in the Benq DW1620

These disc produce exceptionally good results in all my drives at their rated speed and playback is faultless on my range of DVD players. The burn in the DVD-106D at 4x speed is good but the readings are higher than the 8x speed burns showing that the discs are optimized for 8x speed burning. This disc was capable at burning faster than the rated speed in all my high speed drives and I have show the results of such burns The Pioneer still burns well at 12x speed but I would not recommend the NEC burning these discs at 12x

The printable surface is smooth and produces vibrant prints. These disc sell at a premium of about twice the cost of the general market disc. So are they worth the extra?

From these results I would say YES they are if you want a premium disc these are the ones to go for with the added bonus that you can burn them faster in some drives
