8x DVD-R on the Pioneer 107

The New Ritek Manufactured Datasafe 8x DV-R

The New Ritek Manufactured RiDisc 8x DVD-R

I received my sample discs this morning which were made by the household brands Datasafe and RiDisc.

Checking the leadin code they are RITEKG05:

00 6C 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 52 00 02 86 0E 11 L...@....R.....
98 9A 80 00 03 52 49 54 45 4B 47 00 04 30 35 00 .....RITEKG..05.
00 00 00 00 05 88 80 00 00 00 02 00 06 08 12 11 ................
98 9A 80 00 07 88 80 00 00 00 00 00 08 06 18 0D ................
10 07 07 00 09 97 06 0C 0B 70 88 00 0A 80 00 00 .........P......
00 00 10 00 0B 04 1D 17 B8 88 75 00 0C 89 AC 98 ..........U.....
81 00 10 00 0D 00 00 D0 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................

I checked the burning speed in my Pioneer 107 and firmware 1.10 reported only 4X speed maximum, but firmware 1.12 & 1.13 both reported 8X speed burning available.

The discs have the appearance and feel that we have come to expect from the "A" grade quality Ritek. The dye is a deep purple colour with a reflection I could use as a shaving mirror.

Right! That’s the examination over; how does it perform?
I burnt my first test burn using Record Now Max 'Global Image' and these are the times:

Press Record Button count down to burn at 8X
0:10 Initializing disc
0:45 Commence burning at 6X initial speed
2:05 641meg burnt. Commence initializing 8X burn
2:15 Commencing burn at 8X speed
8:10 Burn finished Finalizing disc
8:30 Eject finished disc

Total Time for a 4.25 gig burn 8min 30secs

A DVDTestPro speed graph on this disc comes out perfect.

Playback of the DVD is smooth and chapter skipping positive and the discs are compatible with all my DVD players and are every bit as good as their 4x speed counterparts.

KProbe scans are not as good as I would have likes showing a marked deterioration at the change from 6X to 8X burn with the PI errors.

But the PO errors are almost non-existent.

I have only burnt about half a dozen of these discs so far but the results are consistent and the Datasafe and RiDisc perform similarly. This looks like the disc to buy if you want 8X speed media.
