Battle of the Burners Dual Layer
For these tests I burnt the same title set in each drive, and then tested the burn quality using the Teac drive for the PI/PO error testing and the Pioneer DVR-108 for the read speed testing. Due to the inability to read the media with the NU & Toshiba drives. I was unable to use them as a comparison to the single layer testing Pioneer 108 f/w 1.14 ![]() ![]() The PI graphs are low up until the layer change where there is a sharp rise in both PIE & PIF errors at this point and this increase remains for the remainder of the disc. The speed graph is too erratic after the layer change and cannot reflect the quality of the media this erratic display is caused by a read error at the layer switch point causing the servo to go haywire and give false readings Playback of the disc XStar Player The Film started and played back fine up to 5 minutes before the layer change when it begun to stick & stutter until it reached the layer change which stuck & jumped about 5 seconds when playback became OK. DK Digital Player Playback throughout the disk was perfect with the 1-2 second pause & jump at the layer switch Playback of this disc is generally good and the Speed graph must be ignored after the layer change because I am sure the drive was upset by the errors at the switch and became unstable. NEC ND3500 f/w 208 ![]() ![]() The error charts are quite low with a decrease in PIE & increase in PIF at the layer switch. This chart shows a very good burn. The speed graph is good and shows a smooth transition at the layer change. Playback XStar Playback is good up to 30mins before the layer change when it stutters badly up to the layer switch after which playback resumes perfectly DK Digital Playback is faultless with the 1-2sec pause at the switch BENQ DD DW1620 f/w B7H9 ![]() ![]() The PIE chart shows an increase in errors at the switch rising to just over 40 which is still a low acceptable reading. The speed chart shows a smooth curve with no glitches at the transition Playback XStar Playback is OK up to 5 mins before the transition when it sticks & stutters and at the transition sticks & jumps about 30 seconds DK Digital No problems with playback here and the usual 1-2 sec glitch at the layer switch LITEON SOHW1633S f/w BS0H Check out the charts before the upgrade PIE/PIF & Speed TEAC DV-W516G B4S2 Up to date I have not been able to succesfully burn any Dual Layer media with this drive I suspect a firmware problem and I am expecting a reply from Teac regarding this. MEMOREX DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16 f/w BWSE ![]() ![]() The PIE graph here shows an increase in errors during the first layer but surprisingly the error rate is dramatically reduced during the second layer burn and the transition between layers is smooth. The speed graph is smooth with no glitch at the layer change and the timing is up with the best of the rest. Playback XStar Playback is fine up to 10 mins before the layer change where it sticks and jumps until after the layer change when it carries on faultless to the end. DK Digital No problems in playback All the discs produced here played back in my DK Digital player and the performance was as good as I can expect, they all paused and jumped 1-2 seconds at the layer switch which I am informed that this is part of the D/L standard. None of the discs played in the XStar without problems around the layer switch and the results were varied even with the same disc. With this media the NEC, Memorex & Benq all have my vote and it is difficult to choose between them, I do expect different results with a different brand of media and hope to carry out more testing with them. But bearing in mind the cost of nearly £5 a disc for this media I need a generous supplier to send me some. I expect that during these tests that there will be firmware upgraded to the various drives and I will repeat the tests with the new firmware and update these pages accordingly.
