How To Rip a DVD: 3 Editing VCD

Now that you have your finished *.d2v and *.wav files start up TMPEG.

With the latest version you get 30 days Mpeg 2 encoding and a brilliant wizard to help you with formats.

Select Video-CD> PAL Leave the bit rate at the default and click the next button.

Click the button at the end of video and browse to the d2v file. It then automatically configures for the video. Select the *.wav file for the audio file by clicking the browse button at the end of the Audio file row and selecting the file. Then click next.

You will need to divide the film onto two cds for VCD. To do this you need to put a tick in the source range box and up pops the source box:

Drag the slider to the middle and click 'set end frame'. The blue line then shortens to around the middle, ensure the start frame box has a 0 in it. Write down the end frame number or put it on the windows clipboard. Then click ok.

Then click next while leaving source range ticked.

Hopefully you will see something like this with the file fitting on to your chosen media ie being under 100%. You can select various media under the cd-r box by clicking on the downward pointing arrow and scrolling to your chosen media.

Other wise you will need to click back and click on source adjusting the setting till it fits on your chosen media. Once that is done click next:

Select Create another project for batch encoding. Click OK and then click OK on the pop-up (ensuring it doesn't overwrite anything ie make sure the name is not the same as other *.mpg files).

Now repeat all the stages above up to the source range page (to encode the second half of the film). Now take the end frame number. The one you copied down earlier and paste it onto the start frame number (usually 0 ). Then move the grey slider to the end of the blue slider and click set end frame ie the end of the film. Or click move to end frame, then set end frame.

This is what I got:

Click OK. Then next. Hopefully it is again under the 100% of your chosen media click next. If not you may need to adjust your frame numbers or divide the film in three.

Now name it something different like *2.mpg:

Make sure start encoding immediately is selected and click OK.

Hopefully then this appears notice the time it takes under remaining time this is for the current file as you have a batch of two (signified by remaining 1 in brackets on the lower left) it will take around double this time. This is why this stage is best done while you sleep as it takes around 5 hours on a 1.4ghz it takes longer on slower systems and a little less on the faster ones.

Once this is done you are ready to proceed to the final stage.
