Pioneer Electronics has the solution to the high-end audio format war; just put them all in the same unit. The company has begun shipping the DV-563A, a universal DVD player that offers both DVD video, DVD-Audio and Sony's Super Audio CD (SACD) support, plus MP3 playback.
As a DVD player, it offers Pioneer's PureCinema progressive scan technology and Viterbi Error Correction for reading accuracy, twin-wave laser pickup for CD, VCD, CD-R, and CD-RW playback as well as DVD-R/RW playback. It supports output for Dolby Digital and DTS audio signals.
DVD-Audio is the audio format created by the DVD Forum, which also created the DVD video specification. Sony has not embraced DVD-Audio and instead is promoting SACD, which it feels offers superior audio quality. Both sides have around 1,000 titles each. Because Sony is the creator of SACD, titles from Sony/Columbia records can only be found in SACD format.
The DV-563A is available now from Pioneer retailers at a suggested retail price of $249 (£159).
