Ultima Electronics, a manufacturer of optical disc drives in Taiwan, has launched a digital TV box (receiver) for use with notebook computers, according to company general manager KB Wang.
The digital TV box, named Genie of Vision, is based on the DVB-T (digital video broadcasting-terrestrial) standard and has a built-in burner to record digital TV programs, Wang stated.
In addition to the digital TV receiver, Ultima plans to launch car-use DVD players, optical disc burners with plastic-only chassis (50% less weight), slot-in type 8x DVD Dual burners and slot-in type DVD recorders, Wang said.
Due to decreasing gross margins from production of optical disc drives, the company has extended production to consumer electronics (CE), Wang indicated.
For its optical disc drives, Ultima produces 65% for its OEM clients and 35% for own brand sales.
