Pioneer has unveiled its BDR-101A, one of the world's first PC-use Blu-ray Disc (BD) DVD burner, for sale at US$995 (£560). Due to the high price, the model caters to professional users and enterprise users, according to general manager Shannon Yu for Pioneer's Optical Disc Drive Sales Division in Greater China.
The BDR-101A features writing speeds of 2x for BD-R (recordable or write once) and BD-RE (rewritable), 8x for DVD-R/+R and 4x for DVD-RW/+RW. The corresponding single-sided single-layer BD DVD discs have a storage capacity of 25GB and a maximum data transfer speed of 72Mbps.
Due to problems with copy protection licenses, the shipping of the BDR-101A was postponed from January 2006 to last month, Yu indicated. Although Pioneer plans to offer a second BD DVD burner this year and next year is a period for consumer education and real market demand should begin to emerge in 2008, Yu pointed out.
