PIONEER DVR-108 V1.14 12x Speed

A burn quality test in my NU drive

The PIE chart shows very low start 6x speed burning reduces almost zero 8x speed switch point a slight increase 12x switch rising gradually a peak a mere 38 a good scan indeed. Jitter fairly constant throughout an average just under 12% & PIF errors almost non existent

Speed test in Toshiba drive

This scan shows a perfect graph

NEC ND-3500AG

Burn quality tested in NU drive

The PIE chart shown a low scale does drive justice a maximum 11 indeed a low reading .The jitter just a slight increase 4x 6x switch peaks just over 13%. PIE errors very low a maximum 1.

Speed test in Toshiba drive

An almost perfect scan just one dip could a speck dust disc disc read fine without errors

MEMOREX DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16 vBWSE 8x Speed

Burn quality tested in NU drive

Some minor peaks around 80 start scan smoothing off fewer 40 scam progresses. seems typical Liteon range cannot blame media.. Jitter high beginning (over 16%) % drops scan progresses average just over 13. PIF again peaks 16 start then levels off a mere 1

These errors shown here IMO attributed drive media high enough any effect playback quality.

Speed test in Toshiba drive

The speed test shows a perfect graph going off scale typical DVD-ROM discs produced Liteon series drives

BENQ DW1620 12x Speed

Burn quality tested in NU drive

I am stuck words scan PIE errors so low a maximum 8 an average just 2. I doubt I find a much better scan jitter averages 11 constant throughout scan an almost non existent PIF error chart

This a very good result especially when disc was burnt 12x speed in Benq drive

Speed test in Toshiba drive

This scan shows a perfect graph

PLEXTOR PX-708A 8x Speed

Burn quality tested in NU drive

This drive ageing a little now results still acceptable can see increase in PIE errors 6x 8x switch rising a peak 120 near outer edge then dropping 4gig point drive reverted back a lower burning speed can seen in shading burn. Jitter % gradually rises point then drops down PIF shows a peak around point. disc had problems playback entire length

Speed test in Toshiba drive

The graph good up 3.5gig where falters 1/2 gig consistent PIF chart above. real problem here just a minor deviation in burn quality.

LITEON SOHW1633S 8x Speed

Burn quality tested in NU drive

Some high PIE peaks start scan a maximum just under 60 a pretty fair scan. Jitter regular returns an average 13.1%. PIF a few peaks start consistent PIE errors one peak end

Speed test in Toshiba drive

The speed test shows a perfect graph going off scale almost identical Memorex typical DVD-ROM discs produced Liteon series drives

TEAC DV-W516G 8x Speed

This graph unlike Liteon except peaks double point in scale

Speed test in Toshiba drive

This DVD+R media produces very good burns in most my drives burns produced playable without problems majority my players. BENQ graph does come any better worst graph PLEXTOR still a good graph. another great classic disc Datawrite seem going strength strength superb quality media compatible over a wide range DVD writers. only downside far I am concerned colour I say discs a lot hotter orible mustard coloured surface
Wherever possible I bitsetting utility burn discs DVD-ROM book format full player compatibility unfortunately Pioneer NEC & Teac facility currently available. I expect NEC & Teac include in future firmware updates I doubt Pioneer will. A burn quality test in my NU drive

The PIE errors peak just over 40 an time average 23. Jitter constant around average 11.8% PIF errors almost zero. a good chart sharp increases a generally low reading

NEC ND-3500AG burning speed

The NEC only burnt media 8x speed in three stages resulting in a burning time 9m38secs

Burn quality tested in NU drive

The PIE very low a peak 20 very low outer edge. can clearly see increase in errors when drive speeds up 6x speed then drops drive speeds up again 8x speed write strategy marginally out 6x speed comes back line 8x speed. also reflected in increase jitter % errors 6x period. jitter average good only 11.1%. Generally a good graph NEC burn

MEMOREX DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16 vBWSE

MEMOREX DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16 burning graph

The Memorex burnt disc 8x speed taking 9m31secs

Burn quality tested in NU drive

The PIE & PIF charts here shows irregularities start scan PIE shows a sharp increase just over 1.5gig switch 8x speed point errors increase gradually show an unacceptable sharp increase finish rising a peak over 400. PIF also shows a similar lower peak point. Jitter % slightly erratic start scan showing a gradual increase scan progresses a very large peak end unacceptable. In view poor result I created another disc checked find results similar.

Speed test in Toshiba drive

The graph here smooth up 3 gigs shows signs faltering there sharp drops in read speed errors

BENQ

Benq DW1620 burning

The Benq burnt media super fast 12x speed taking 6m18secs burn disc. quickest burn media

Burn quality tested in NU drive

The pie graph fairly steady low up until outer edge when burning speed was fastest. increase gradual excessive so should a problem drive was burn 8x speed chart very good. jitter % marginally high course concern

exception Memorex burns burns good recommend media use in other drives I used. Memorex manufactured Liteon my Teac drive produced similar results 8x speed media I feel a firmware upgrade needed before I can recommend media drives
The movies produced in rest my drives played back faultlessly over my full range DVD players Printable surface covered 42-118mm surface a nice matt white finish producing very good colour prints
Disc a good partner Datawrite Classic Grey 8x speed FUJIFILM03 I reviewed in May had good reviews since so looking a good reliable 8X speed printable DVD-R then go far wrong these.

Eager check out quality printing. I asked my sponsors a disc printer was provided an Epson R300 proceeded burn a few movies print labels them. colours a bright a white surface print compensated metallic finish giving differing patterns reflected light. I especially way contrast enhanced reflective surface giving a kind 3D effect especially darker prints.
prints give an expensive professional look finished disc I think I can enhance my collection way.
Well now printing surface reviewed how discs perform
I burnt discs 4x speed maximum rated speed in my Pioneer drives 105,106,107 & 108 performed equally well in drives. Playback was faultless I come expect RITEKG04 media
Here a scan one burnt 4x speed in my Pioneer DVR-108 f/w 1.14
The PIE peaked under 50 an average 18 very good. Jitter averages 10.5% fairly constant throughout entire scan PIF peak was 1 again excellent
And here a speed read graph in my Toshiba drive
Nothing much report here just a plain smooth graph.
A Perfect Curve!
Conclusion
disc a good quality Ritek 4x speed media excellent burn qualities Pioneer range DVD writers very good player compatibility smooth consistent playback. silver surface gives printed disc an expensive printed look easily distinguished commercial pressed DVD's. only drawback I can find speed rating slow 4x speed compared current range media good things worth waiting for. So RiDisc any surplus then send my way so I can enhance my collection replacing my discs Silver pintables

16X Speed DVD+R Burning

Here my tests 16x speed DVD+R burning.
There still a shortage elusive 16x speed DVD media I obtained samples PRODISCR04 16x DVD+R media Memorex brand majority drives I burn media 16x I decided include my tests here. Only official latest firmwares results shown only drives actually burn media 16x speed

Pioneer Test Burn maximum 4x speed DVD+R media
The Pioneer DVR-108 only burn media 4x speed so tests carried out in section
NEC Test Burn 16X DVD+R Media

The test burn NEC drive shows a CAV curve starting just under 7x speed finishing 16x speed very end burn. dips in burn OPC (power calibration check points) ensure optimum burning strategy. total time test burn was 6m10secs actual time burn a full title hard drive was 6m40secs

Reading back test burn in NEC was impressive almost curve burn taking 5m01sec time differences being OPC points burn process

Reading disc in Toshiba DVD-ROM drive was a smooth curve a slight glitch 4 gig mark possibly due dust disc. read time disc was 7m13sec

The Pie error showed a maximum 110 higher I liked still well acceptable jitter a little high rose above 15% around 3 gigs there a slight spike in PIF errors around 4gig nothing worry about.
movie played back OK in my players even one does DVD+R playback was possible bitsetting utility enabling me burn disc DVD-ROM book formatBENQ DD DW1620 f/w B7H9
The test burn Benq drive shows CAV curve starting just under 7x speed again rising 16x speed end burn there a lot OPC points delays produce shorter NEC resulting in a burning time 5m49 seconds. A full film title hard drive took 6m31secs
Reading back test burn was a bit slow took 9m35sec
Reading disc in Toshiba DVD-ROM drive produced a perfect curve taking 7m12sec

The PIE error rate was impressive peaking 47 an time average 18. Very low impressive. Jitter peaked 13.7% maintaining an average 11.8% & PIF errors very low odd one a peak 5 average being less 1. A very good result indeed a I very little playback equally good charts. TEAC DV-W516G B4S2

The Teac DV-W516G only burn media 8x speed so tests carried out in section
Although drive basically the Memorex & Liteon firmware drive prevents burning media 16x speed although Memorex & Liteon results should possible a suitable firmware upgrade.
Teac produce a suitable upgrade drive then I add tests

MEMOREX DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16 f/w BWSE2
Here we see a smooth curve OPC points taking 5m58sec complete burn. A full DVD title took 6m 32 sec complete burn process
Reading back test disc was a little slow took 9m38sec

Reading disc in Toshiba DVD-ROM drive was impressive going off my scale a peak 16.16x speed taking 4m58sec complete read

PIE errors a little high here reaching 80 1.5gig peaking 160 2.75 gig. jitter rises 15% 1.75 gig remains around there rest scan a peak 16.9 I see jitter well below 15 ideally 10-11% I am looking for. PIF peaks 10 although high I seen better.

These errors second highest in charts affect playback readability good in cases.LITEON SOHW1633S f/w BS01

This burning chart almost identical Memorex burn only 3 seconds faster burning 6m02sec & title took 6m22sec 10 seconds faster Memorex time difference can explained different time take initialize discs an unknown variable.

ii Read back 9m39sec just 1 second diferant Memorex

Here again read speed disc in DVD-ROM drive extremely fast under 5mins

PIE errors rise peak 324 2.5 & 3gig PIF errors peak 14 accordingly; jitter goes above 15% just under 2gig peaks 18.4 very high. error pattern drive similar Memorex expected there problems in playback readability.

Conclusion

The media PRODISCR04 I prototype samples so may up final production standard so basically tests see how drives compare burning 16x speed Pioneer DVR-108 & Teac DV-W516G failed burn media 16x speed so I had leave out tests.
burning speeds only differ a maximum 13 seconds an actual burn 21 seconds a test burn differences can accounted in initialisation burn so there nothing chose here
Read back data burn NEC wins hands down here being 4m30sec faster rest
Read back disc in Toshiba drive Memorex Liteon burns read back 2 minutes faster other two
PIE errors Benq best followed NEC Memorex & Liteon
Jitter Benq again best followed NEC Liteon & Memorex
PIF Benq Memorex NEC & Liteon
So error rates Benq comes out tops
16x speed burning we can expect an increase in error rates especially burning process speeds up charts there real cause concern any drives able burn 16x speed DVD+R media full speed able book format DVD-ROM. A bitsetting utility available drive specific. I use DVDInfoPro book type my drives a very useful program diagnostic charts. drives produce excellent burns results I hesitate in recommending any them.
