My first test burn was force burn 8xspeed my Pioneer 107 patched firmware result was 8 minutes a disc burn I can proud of. graph perfect up 3.5gig then a few minor glitches this. I played back disc my very fussy Mustek DVD Player played back perfect up 10 seconds end when end credits stuttered slightly. can see graph never went below 5x speed mark whilst reading zero read errors reported KProbe tests give an indication quality burn showed very little PO/PI errors just peaking outer edge happens most discs I continued burn various discs 8x 4x speed check burn consistency I 8x speed graphs similar first burn 4x speed burns produced almost perfect graphs KProbe results also a lot better 4x speed peaks I can say best results I seen any media. Again results consistent every burn I done so far. I now burnt my first tub 25 discs without a single failure. I checked playback compatibility a variety different players good smooth playback in them. My initial tests done Pioneer 105,106 &107 almost results writer I still cannot believe Bulkpaq Branded discs so consistently good. I intend carry out tests in my other makes writers next few days. initial results 8x speed my Pioneer 107 double rating disc consistent burn I hesitate doing my burning speed discs doubt my findings I don’t blame I was sceptical when I saw report was published without my prior knowledge. I can say buy yourself a tub break bank then try prove me wrong. pleasantly surprised. Let’s just hope quantity & quality control keeps discs standard moment. » Installing A New DVD Burner

Link: "I've just got my new DVD burner. Can tell me my PC handle how I install get burn copy my DVD's?" regular questions I get asked I try answer go basics installing setting up burner. I recommend minimum specification a 4x speed DVD writer:
  • Processor 1gig min. recommended 2gig
  • Memory 256meg minimum recommended 512meg
  • Hard drive 20gigs minimum free space recommended 50 gigs
  • Graphics card suit requirements critical recommended GForce2 higher.
  • One spare external 5 ¼ drive bay writer
DVD writers usually come in one two packages Retail Pack: usually contains drive a manual burning software together mounting screws IDE cable CD audio cable basic installation instructions recording editing playback software. I recommended type pack inexperienced users. necessary parts supplied together instructions. OEM Bare Drive: bulk drive supplied system builders manufacturer specific. drives come just a bare drive without any supporting hardware software drive may may manufacturers firmware firmware may a specific equipment manufacturer supported drive manufacturer. main advantage buying an OEM drive cost typically being £50 less retail box drive. install drive quite simple only needs a few basic tools. I cover installation just one burner in a basic PC. first most important thing isolate power PC disconnect power cable. Next advisable essential disconnect connectors back PC it's a good idea a note where connectors go first. Remove cover side panels PC so able access inside. then need available external drive bay fit drive. There should a blank plastic cover front pc over spare bay remove cover behind there may a metal plate loosely fastened chassis. Gently bending & fro should easily break connection chassis enabling remove hey presto a slot available insert drive. Before installing drive need configure IDE settings drive. recommended burner Master secondary IDE controller so check back writer find jumper three options M (Master) S (Slave) CS (Cable Select). There a flat ribbon cable original drive connected motherboard there should a spare 40 way connector enabling connect new drive. may swap connector round one already connected CD drive enable drives connected easily cable does matter plug goes drive. I recommend replace standard 40 way ribbon cable a UDMA66 80way cable allow faster file transfers. new drive only one then need connect a new ribbon cable secondary IDE connector motherboard. Locating should fairly simple there already two flat cables connected board: a 34 way one floppy drive a 40 way one hard drive. should find secondary IDE connector next 40way hard drive one. new ribbon cable 3 connectors it: 2 close one end one far end one connect motherboard. an UDMA cable motherboard end a different colour others usually black connect connector motherboard ensuring stripe down edge cable way round hard drive connector usually locating lugs so inserted wrong way always. can slide DVD drive front slot connect up 40way socket back 4 way power connecter side this. 40 way connector should a keyway allowing only insert one way always case. ribbon cable a stripe down one edge indicates pin 1 edge cable edge (Pin 1) should nearest power connector. power connector two bevelled edges can only correctly fitted one way. a spare connector new drive need get a power splitter cable consists a plug connected two sockets short leads double up connectors. sure IDE power connectors fully seated. other connector may want use CD audio a cable audio output socket drive CD audio input motherboard sound card. connector a small 4 pin connector rear drive connects two screened L & R audio plug usually polarised clips in critical connected in reverse just get reverse stereo. may already one cables connected original drive decide use new drive playing CD audio in case can omitted. other end audio cable needs connected CD auxiliary input sound card connectors vary according hardware. Once connections secure can fasten drive in place carefully align front drive other drive front case. Then use two short fine threaded screws in side drive secure it. There usually 4 screw holes in side accommodate various mountings only two necessary secure it. sure only use short screws secure drive because long screws inserted side drive can easily damage internal parts drive. Once sure connections secure drive correctly mounted can replace covers PC reconnect connectors power connector. now ready switch on. In Windows when system boots up should see drive in explorer should allocated a drive letter. drive now function a CD/DVD reader writer remains now install software. purchased drive a Retail Pack then software need get started included a CD DVD supplied drive otherwise need purchase software. cannot copy DVD's CD's without sort software need a DVD software player able play DVD movies. I recommend Cyberlink Power DVD a Player Record Now Max burning software. Installing PowerDVD enable play commercial DVD movies first time ask region DVD drive & software region 2 UK users setting can changed up 5 times before permanent so plan play movie imports American releases need remove limitation software firmware drive. Copying retail movies directly possible without removal encryption encoded onto DVD although now easily done current software available legal reasons I decline include details here. Although details given in article based my own experiences refer basic systems two systems alike determine suitability information before attempting any modifications. should attempted any doubt better call in an experienced friend rather inadvertently damage system. I read forum last 6 months tried myself so how is: U10A U12A,500a 500ax basically drive Firmware interchangeable. only restriction introduced Flasher software checks identity drive matches upgrade. means flashing a U10A/U12A a 500a/ax firmwares requires hacked firmware flashers. odd reason required flash 1.1c 1.1e U10A firmware. 1.1e upgrade only upgrade 1.1a U10A firmware without "tweaking" Before start changing Firmware sure need to. I see a lot people desperately flashing drives without even bothering find out advantages new firmware might be. Remember could lose waranty flash one series drive another drive dies. Also 1.1a 1.1d 2.0c appear only available new drives flasher versions available. So move away firmwares there way back. new 510 drives apear diffrent hardware interchangeable should my firmware do: U10A firmware: 1.1a 4x DVD-R:2.4x DVD+R (1x Ritek G03) 1.1c 4x DVD-R:2.4x DVD+R (2x Ritek G03) 1.1e 4x DVD-R:2.4x DVD+R (2x Ritek G03) 500a/ax firmware: 1.0d 4x DVD-R:2.4x DVD+R (1x Ritek G03 sometimes helps writing 4x Ritek G04 disks) 1.0f 2.0f ->1.1e 4x DVD-R: 4x DVD+R (2x Ritek G03) DVD-R 4x U10a 500a firmwares should write 4x DVD-R disks 4x. burning software report 4x DVD-R media 4x allow choose 4x. Unfortunately lots drives trouble burning "unapproved" (i.e. affordable disks princo) 4x (15 mins a full disk) even though burning software allows 4x selected. disks burn 2x take 30 mins. ability write 4x critically dependant individual drive varies batch batch certain media. variability lead a lot confusion Legend people reporting 1 disk burnt "while standing head" burned 4x whilst one burned "while was raining burned 2x." often follow threads state 4x problem can solved by..... followed a later retraction when disks later in batch start burn 2x again. In summary Sony does burn reliably Princo media 4x. drive does phase moon just a good drive a good batch disks. "My drive starts 4x slows down later on" confusion caused fact software Record now max initially indicate burning 4x despite drive really burning 2x. lead a lot people suspecting buffer under runs DMA problems. DVDDecryptor a good check always show true burning speed show state buffers. keep emptying then a data transfer drive problem. Get a faster computer reduce activity IDE channel generally fiddle IDE stuff . buffers always full writes 2x then drive calibrated disk decided going try burn 4x dropped back 2x. Most people real problems Princo Media. can in case burn 2x buy diffrent media. None firmware versions likely help you. Ritek disks likely write 4x guaranteed. My drive was happy firmwares most RITEK G04 wrote 2x a batch Traxdata RITEK G04 disks. may find 1.0d firmware helps marginal disks. I could burn Traxdata RITEK disks 4x 1.0d. DVD+R I previously (in thread) said I thought 1.1c 1.1e versions U10A software write DVD+R 4x. case (at least ARITA disks I tried.) a firmware thing. burning software reports 2.4x disks firmware. upgrade 1.0f above 500A/AX software then should see media reported 4x expect see burn 4x. I just burned a couple ARITA 4x 1.0g I say CDspeed results compare favourably best DVD-R results (Pioneer) Flash's test page. want 4x writing a reasonable price DVD player accepts DVD+R disks seem best bet SONY moment. can get firmware Sony drives in our downloads section.
