» Build a PC dedicated HD DVD Playback

Link: Slax Linux operating system
I purchased my first large screen LCD TV a Sony Bravia 40 my local TV retailer. Being impressed HD demo playing TVs display I investigated was surprised find was actually a PC a DVD-ROM drive was outputting display.
I persuaded Jason shop manager let me investigate setup a view cloning & he kindly loaned me PC inspection
PC my surprise very high spec & very basic:-
  • Pentium 4 - 2.5GHz Processor
  • 256MB DDR 400 PC3200 RAM
  • GForce 5200 128meg DVI graphics
  • DVD-ROM drive
  • NO Hard Drive
The operating system DVD disc booted up Linux MPlayer play movie files 1080i resolution
OS Slax fast beautiful Linux operating system fit onto a small (3.14") CD-ROM disc. runs directly C D (or USB) without installing. Live C D based Slackware Linux distribution uses Unification File System (also known unionfs) allowing read-only filesystem behave a writable one saving changes memory.
I building a PC dedicated playing HD movie clips Demo PC a guide. minimum specification was based demo works video only trouble audio so my PC specification follows:-
  • Pentium 4 - 3.0GHz Processor
  • 512MB DDR 400 PC3200 RAM
  • ATI 256meg DVI graphics card
  • DVD-R/RW burner
  • On Board Sound
The Sony demo disc had drivers GForce graphics I difficult get better 720p resolution GForce 5200 graphics whereas I can easily get 1080i resolution ATI graphics so my preferred graphics.
My OS based the SLAX Standard Edition v 5.1.8.1. I there modifications needed OS file system just change background graphics autorun player & hide desktop & mouse done adding a module. (It can also done adding files externally in rootcopy folder easy modification a complex file structure.)
Adding extras modules system quite easily done just placing a module modules directory automatically loads & installs startup without altering original OS so any problems created a module can easily reversed just removing module
needed autoplay C D/DVD:-The Slax OS so versatile run almost any media: Hard Drive C D/DVD-ROM. Flash Memory Cards Flash media any bootable removable media.
The basic OS 200meg leaving plenty space even a C D a small movie clip.
my project I extracted whole C D ISO unmodified an empty FAT32 partition my hard drive enabled me boot up Slax DOS ( I a DOS boot option can easily boot a DOS boot floppy disc). Add appropriate graphics card driver module modules folder (at stage leave out autoplay module)
start OS I simply select partition drive letter Slax ISO content I call X: type following:-
  • X:
  • C D BOOT
  • C D DOS
  • LINUX.BAT
This start up OS bring up login screen need log in with
Login:- root
Password:- toor
next command starts OS
startx
Usually refuse start because graphics configured so need type
xconf
Wait configure then type:-
startx
This time start up GUI
managed get far now time check movie playback. I best files play HD mpg files 25Mbps bitrate player capable playing most video formats mpg avi mov
Add a directory root SLAX partition named videos place movie clips in directory open up konsole type:-
/usr/bin/mplayer -vo xv -dr -fs -monitoraspect 16:9 -loop 0 /boot/videos/*.*
open up mplayer loop play full screen movie clips in videos folder assuming a 16:9 TV display
Once proven can then add autoplay module placed in modules folder install & run next start up Slax
The autoplay module changes screen background navy blue removes desktop icons moves & hides task bar makes mouse pointer invisible autoplays movie files otherwise OS still functions normal great difficulty finding mouse pointer ;)
Cheatcodes bypass login when run dos added config file in boot/dos folder just add line end text
autoexec=xconf;nopcmcia;startx
Once system built up & working hard drive can a DVD transferred other removable media just kept hard drive played there
Creating a bootable DVD quite simple Slax Utilities two step disk creation create a disc ISO final project (autoexec=xconf;nopcmcia;startx added boot sequence when creating ISO) can then burnt any ISO supporting DVD burner application. I did find burning application included Slax fell over when came burn DVDs so I preferred use Imgburn I find most reliable.
I find MPlayer playback a variety HD Movie formats tested so far mpg mov ts. I player recognize mpeg extensions played file ok extension renamed mpg. Any play I TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress convert files HD mpg format format I find least demanding playback smooth.
So far I only onboard audio intend investigate use Dolby 5.1 & DTS an additional sound card
player works very well autoplay function plays any movie movie clip can configured play movies selection versatile in type formats play.
It a substitute commercial HD DVD Players extremely rare in UK
software freeware readily available player open discussion in BDDVDFORUM where I am sure ideas & enhancements forthcoming

» Ask flash: Dolby 5.1 Surround How I up my Speakers?

Link:
top end DVD-Videos produced a dedicated Dolby sound track often referred Dolby 5.1. get best out system audio needs a dedicated amplifier system & speakers. There ways setting up system depending equipment & finance.
DVD players usually a combination one following:-
  • Digital Coax (Phono)
  • Digital Optical (TOS Link)
  • Decoded 6 Chanel (Phono)
  • 2 Channel Stereo
The top end DVD-Movies can latest digital audio 6.1 7.1 THX & DTS channels up 8 speakers. article I am concentrating 5.1 (6 Speaker system) Digital outputs need a dedicated decoder/amplifier decode signals separate components whereas 6 channel Phono output already decoded inside player just needs amplified a dedicated 6 channel amplifier connected speakers an amplified 6 speaker system can purchased around £20.00 analogue outputs cannot connected directly speakers amplified first.
A typical setup consists a 6 speaker system
  1. Left Front (Main Speaker)
  2. Right Front (Main Speaker)
  3. Left Rear (Surround)
  4. Right Rear (Surround)
  5. Centre
  6. Sub Woofer (Low Frequency Effects)
sketch right shows a typical layout a Dolby 5.1 speaker system.
The factors need observed when selecting & setting up speakers
  • The speaker's handling power greater maximum output amplifier avoid overloading & blowing speakers

  • The speaker's impedance (ohms Ω) NOT less amplifier's output specification avoid overloading & blowing amplifier

  • The Front Left & Right speakers need identical placed side viewing screen angled towards central listening area placed approximately half screen width side TV equidistant center display.
If screen a normal CRT TV then speakers need magnetically screened spaced well away TV avoid speaker magnets distorting colors screen. speakers can floor standing columns wall mounted need positioned level screen slightly higher.

  • The two Rear Surround speakers need identical & placed side room slightly rear listener above head height facing inwards towards listening area

  • The center speaker needs mounted centrally just above below viewing screen need magnetically screened avoid distortion picture a CRT

  • The Sub Woofer can placed anywhere in room floor near touching wall & away any doorways. I prefer position shown under near TV

Speaker Wiring
Most 5.1 speaker systems come bundles wire connect up speakers main amp I find wire barely adequate recommend a thicker cable. I use stranded fig 8 2.5mm capable 25amp capacity adequate most home theater systems.
In ideal systems speaker cables should length rear speakers & length front speakers. Careful attention taken polarity speakers wires. wires usually a black white stripe along edge one pair decide terminal (red black) going connect striped wire & maintain configuration ALL speaker connections throughout.
There two main types connections speakers Spring Clips & Binding Posts Note colors & polarity observed when making speaker connections
Spring Clips can connected bare wire twisted ends Pin connectors connected onto end bare wire. Bare wire sometimes too thick clips generally only low power speakers designed thinner cable. I prefer binding post method most higher power amplifiers & speakers
Spring Clips
Pin Connectors

Binding Posts

Binding Posts

Banana Plugs
Banana Plugs Twin
Spade Lugs
Bare Wire Slotted Through
Bare Wire Bent Round
  • Lay out two cables rear speakers leaving enough spare maneuverability & label ends future identification.
  • Lay out cables two front & center speakers & label identification
  • Sub Woofer need connected amplifier's sub speaker out twin speaker cable a powered sub woofer need connected RCA Phono a coaxial cable amplifier DVD player.
  • Bind speaker cables a loom route amplifier.
  • Ensure amplifier powered trim cables length too short terminate according amplifier's connectors & connect up cables corresponding terminals amplifier ensuring observe correct polarity.
  • Connect up amplifier DVD player one three ways connecting
    • Digital Coax (Single high quality RCA Phono cable)

    • Decoded 6 Chanel (6 channel analogue RCA Phono)
  • The digital coax & optical connected decoder input amplifier & decoded analogue signals connected 6 channel analogue input amplifier powered speakers
Now system connected needs tested sure speakers connected correctly.

Most high end amplifiers a speaker test signal can enabled playing a white noise signal in speaker separately speakers should listening volume when heard optimum listening position. can up ear accurate settings can use a Sound Level Meter. a simple 5.1 speaker test I a Video Title can burnt a DVD (Available Here)
advanced setting up & testing I recommend purchasing one DVDsAssuming equipment now up correctly just insert favourite DVD sit back & enjoy experience.

» DataWrite Flash Media

Link:

DataWrite now branched out Flash Media Market currently marketing 8 different types

sent me a few samples popular types review & promised types when available. Flash media was originally in digital cameras replaced floppy discs early digital cameras floppy discs store captured images a capacity 1.44meg meant amount data could stored onto a floppy disc was very limited. Flash media now available in capacities 4gig can store 3,000 times data. Flash media extremely fast transferring data moving parts wear out. Today's usage longer limited digital cameras.
Flash memory widely in Consumer Devices :
  • Notebook computers
  • Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)
  • Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
  • Solid-state music players MP3 players
  • Personal computers
  • Digital cameras
  • Cell phones
  • Electronic musical instruments
  • Television set-top boxes
  • Pagers
Flash memory also in industrial applications where reliability data retention in power-off situations key requirements in:
  • Security systems
  • Embedded computers
  • Networking communication products
  • Retail management products
    (e.g. handheld scanners)
  • Military systems
  • Solid-state disk drives
  • Wireless communication devices
  • Medical products
Flash Memory discs I am currently reviewing illustrated below

512meg SD

Compact Flash 1gig

Mini SD 512meg & 1gig

I Tested Flash Media in my digital camera Palm Tungsten T5. SD cards functioned exceptionally well. I a Kingston 15 in 1 card reader benchmark media I one faster card readers available being able read Flash Discs around 20MB/sec
I two programs called HD Tune ATTO Disk Benchmark check transfer rate Flash Media click images above media results pop up.

All cards sustained read transfer speeds 8 & 12MB/sec write speeds 2 & 3MB/sec. check performance in real time I transferred a DVD Video VOB file discs then played back video card in card reader. Video Played back flawlessly my laptop PC.
DataWrite always represented value money introduction Flash media vast collection quality goods indeed another prime example this.

» Ask Flash: How I put my VHS tapes onto DVD

There two main approaches depending how want proceed
  1. Copy tapes directly DVD Disc a DVD-Video Recorder
  2. Copy tapes a PC via a Video Capture Card
Then process & edit DVD Video Title burn DVD-VIDEO onto a DVD Disc.
above require additional hardware in PC External DVD-Video Recorder
Home Video's tapes recorded off TV programs can usually copied without any problems purchased rented copyrighted video material movies macro protection encoded video prevent direct copying causing copy flicker  & black out pop up a prohibition message DVD-Video Recorder. own original VHS Video copyright owners permission a back up tape may possible use an in line adapter remove macro signal then a perfect backup. backing up copyrighted material a grey area I am expand subject.
VHS Video player needs in good order good tape tracking I prefer use an SVHS Video player S Video & Stereo Audio Output.

» Ask Flash: Why Won't my DVD Player Play Imported DVDs

Link:
There two main reasons Region Codes and PAL/NTSC video format compatibility
Region Coding:-
DVD region codes prevent people around world watching others DVDs. There a total six different DVD region codes listed below. in place birth DVD US Motion Picture Association other organizations in order keep people buying playing DVDs other regions. companies' way controlling markets keeping separate. example American movies released later in Europe Japan well elsewhere released in US. American DVDs worked in European players then there less stopping people in Europe buying US version early before released in home country. bypasses local market movie companies don't want that. Regions
  1. The US territories Canada
  2. Europe Japan Middle East South Africa
  3. Taiwan Korea Philippines Indonesia Hong Kong
  4. Mexico South America Australia>
  5. Russia former Russia most Africa
  6. China

Most DVD Players supplied region code country in sold her in UK Region 2. players advertised multi-region (that play any disc any region)
Technically there thing a region zero disc a region zero player. There thing an all-region disc. There also all-region players. players can "hacked" special command sequences remote control switch regions play regions. players can physically modified ("chipped") play discs regardless regional codes disc. usually voids warranty illegal in most countries. retailers especially outside North America sell players already modified multiple regions in cases simply provide instructions how access "secret" region change features already built player. most popular region code hacks can videohelp.com
PAL / NTSC
There two formats: PAL (Phase Alternate Lines) NTSC (National Television Standards Committee).
NTSC mainly in North America Japan Mexico Canada PAL almost everywhere else in world including Australia NZ.
Most televisions DVD players designed over past few years support PAL NTSC. say example play a NTSC DVD a PAL ONLY system vice versa picture monitor distorted.
PAL vs. NTSC
The U.K. PAL format technically superior US NTSC television format. DVDs released in U.K. 25% lines resolution area USA counterparts. Moreover color quality PAL superior US NTSC format. local DVD product a potential quality advantage over foreign product. I say potential because PAL DVDs very poorly authored. a reason someone use region 2 version a movie furthermore there can differences content. contrast PAL versions movies run 4% faster NTSC counterparts (or theatrical release) resultant speed change comes a pitch shift. means music audio play just 4% faster changes every note music makes people speak a slightly higher pitched voice. In addition movie length PAL release reduced 4% theatrical release. does worry most people.
Depending equipment there ways round I basically discuss UK side although USA similar in reverse. Most (but all) modern DVD Players ability convert an NTSC disc output PAL 50hz viewable domestic TV receivers via Phono RCA Jack S Video Scart inputs Composite Video S Video. A few DVD Players output PAL 60hz can viewed satisfactory modern TVs result in a rolling picture older TVs. DVD Player output PAL resultant picture an older TV in black & white rolling. Most DVD Players a Scart & Component Video output outputs colors & synchronizing signals separately can connected directly Scart Component video input a modern TV. gives best quality picture signal independent any PAL/NTSC format.
